Lesson 7 of 10

Opportunities & Ideation

Lesson 6 of 9

Opportunities & Ideation

How to turn pain points into 'How Might We' statements and practical opportunities.

Opportunities & Ideation

This lesson helps you translate the “So what?” of your map into prioritized opportunities.

How might we (HMW) statements

A HMW statement makes an opportunity human, focused, and solution-aware:

  • “How might we reduce friction during onboarding for users on mobile?”
  • “How might we provide a quick guest checkout when a user is in a hurry?”

Prioritization

Prioritize opportunities using simple criteria:

  • Impact: how much user benefit will this deliver?
  • Effort: engineering and design effort required
  • Evidence: how well documented is the pain point?

Basic scoring example:

Impact: High (3), Medium (2), Low (1)
Effort: Low (3), Medium (2), High (1)
Evidence: High (3), Medium (2), Low (1)

Total score = Impact + Effort + Evidence

Exercise

Write three HMW statements from your case study and score them with the basic rubric.
